Siegfried Mureșan: The European Parliament voted €145 million macro-financial assistance to Moldova

The plenary of the European Parliament has just voted, by a large majority, the €145 million macro-financial assistance to the Republic of Moldova. The announcement was made by Romanian MEP Siegfried Mureșan on his Facebook account. According to Mureșan, the decision was adopted with 561 votes in favour, 43 against and 20 abstentions, "which shows, once again, that the European Parliament is united in helping the Republic of Moldova".

"I am glad that we have quickly adopted this new financial support. It was essential that the new assistance be approved without delay so that the money reaches the Republic of Moldova as soon as possible, in the second part of this year", said Siegfried Mureșan.

The Romanian MEP recalled that, as rapporteur for the opinion of the European Parliament's Committee on Budgets on this support, he recommended to his colleagues to endorse the assistance decision as proposed by the European Commission, without tabling amendments. "Thus, we managed to give our opinion on the financial aid in the Committee on Budgets as early as 17 April. This also allowed the Committee on International Trade to approve the support quickly, on 27 April, and today we could already give the final vote in the European Parliament plenary," added Muresan.

The Romanian MEP stressed that the Republic of Moldova, as a candidate for EU membership, needs as much support as possible to continue its European path, while managing all the challenges the country is facing, such as the high inflation rate, the increase in energy prices caused by gas blackmail from the Russian Federation, and the security threats caused by the situation in the region.

"This is why we must continue and increase our support for the authorities in Chisinau, because only by helping Moldova to remain stable and continue European integration can we guarantee security at our borders and within the European Union", wrote MEP Siegfried Muresan.
