Gagauzia holds second round of elections for the position of Bashkan
The second round of elections for the position of Bashkan is being held today in Gagauzia. The candidate of the Sor Party, Evghenia Guțul, and Grigorii Uzun, supported by the PSRM, are fighting for the seat.
During the election campaign, both candidates called for closer relations with the Russian Federation.
It should be noted that the pro-European ruling party PAS had no candidate in the Gagauz autonomy. President Maia Sandu previously said that the Gagauz region is dominated by Russian propaganda, and that many candidates for the post of Gagauz autonomy's Bashkan are "agents of the Russian Federation rather than politicians who want to work for the citizens of the Gagauz autonomy".
More than 57,000 citizens took part in the first round of elections in the Gagauz autonomy on 30 April, with a turnout of 57.8%.
