Sudan ceasefire agreement: Fighting to be suspended for a week

Representatives of the Sudanese army, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and paramilitaries from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) led by General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, have agreed to a week-long ceasefire starting Monday, the United States and Saudi Arabia announced Saturday in a joint statement, Digi24.ro reports.

This ceasefire "could be extended with the agreement of both sides," the US State Department said in a statement released Saturday evening. According to the document, the two sides "agreed to facilitate the delivery and distribution of humanitarian aid, the restoration of essential services, and the withdrawal of troops from hospitals and critical public infrastructure."

This ceasefire "will take effect at 21.45 local time (19.45 GMT) on 22 May" and will last "seven days", the statement said, quoted by AFP, according to Agerpres.

"Both sides expressed (...) their commitment not to seek any military advantage during the 48-hour notification period after the signing of the agreement and before the ceasefire begins," Washington and Riyadh stressed.

Several previously announced ceasefires have been violated since clashes erupted in Sudan on April 15, Riyadh and Washington noted.

The announcement comes two weeks after representatives of the two warring generals met for the first time in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to negotiate.

Since its outbreak on April 15, the conflict in Sudan has left nearly a thousand dead and more than a million displaced and refugees.
