Igor Grosu asked the Government to initiate the procedure for Moldova's withdrawal from the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly Agreement

Speaker of Parliament Igor Grosu has asked the Government to initiate the procedure for Moldova's withdrawal from the Agreement on the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States.

The document was sent to the Executive today.

At its meeting on 19 May, the Permanent Bureau of the Parliament decided to initiate the procedure for denouncing the Convention on the Interparliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States No 1605-XIII of 17 March 1998. The decision was supported by a majority of the members of the Permanent Bureau.

The Republic of Moldova withdraws from the Agreement on the Interparliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States. The announcement was made on Monday by the Speaker of Parliament, Igor Grosu.

On 15 May, the Speaker of the Parliament, Igor Grosu, recalled that Ukraine had left this organisation, making us geographically separated from the CIS member countries.

"After 30 years, it has become very clear that Moldova's membership in the CIS structures did not help us to solve the Transnistrian conflict, did not help us to remove the Russian army from the territory of the Republic of Moldova, did not save us from economic embargoes in the most complicated times. Being in the CIS did not protect us from energy blackmail in the middle of winter, threats and official statements hostile to the independence and sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova. Membership of the CIS did not protect member countries from military attacks, war and illegal occupation of sovereign territories. After a founding country of the CIS, the Russian Federation, barbarously attacked another founding state, Ukraine, occupying its territories and killing its citizens, this organisation can no longer call itself a community", said Igor Grosu.

The Speaker of the Parliament announced then that, according to the procedures, at the next meeting of the Permanent Bureau of the Parliament, he will submit a proposal to Prime Minister Dorin Recean to prepare a legislative initiative on the denunciation of the Convention on the Interparliamentary Assembly of the CIS States of 17.03.1998, published in the Official Gazette on 02.04.1998. Later, when it comes to Parliament, we will vote on the denunciation of the agreement", said Igor Grosu.

The Party of Socialists condemned the authorities' intention to withdraw our country from the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly. The Socialists have announced that they will launch a campaign to promote partnerships with Eastern countries.

The PSRM states that the Republic of Moldova will not survive without strengthening political, economic, social and spiritual ties with the countries of the Eurasian space, and that the decision on withdrawal from the CIS can only be taken on the basis of a national referendum.

After the initiation of procedures to this end, reactions have also come from Moscow. Russian officials claim that Moldova will only lose and that it is in fact a political game.
