Borell: In the coming days, the EU will finalize the sanctions against individuals from the Republic of Moldova who obstruct or undermine the democratic political process

In the coming days, the European Union will finalize the sanctions that could be applied to individuals from the Republic of Moldova who obstruct or undermine the democratic political process, including the organization of elections, or attempt to overthrow the constitutional order, including through acts of violence. The announcement was made by the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borell, after the meeting of foreign ministers from the 27 EU countries.

We remind you that on April 24, in Luxembourg, the foreign ministers of the EU countries reached a political agreement on the creation of a regime of sanctions against those who act to destabilize the Republic of Moldova and against the constitutional order in this country.

Thanks to this new framework, the EU will be able to target people who obstruct or undermine the democratic political process, including the organization of elections, or who try to overthrow the constitutional order, including through acts of violence.

Future restrictive measures could also target persons who commit serious financial misconduct in relation to public funds and the unauthorized export of capital, to the extent that they could take control of the activities of state authorities or seriously influence them.

Bogdan Aurescu: "I hope that these lists will be adopted as soon as possible"

On the eve, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania, Bogdan Aurescu, requested the adoption as soon as possible of a list of sanctions against the people who are behind the attempts to destabilize the Republic of Moldova. The statement was made yesterday, before the meeting of foreign ministers from the 27 countries of the European Union, in which the head of Romanian diplomacy participated. Later, Aurescu's proposal was made in the plenary meeting.

"I will present a situation of the procedure that Romania initiated, together with other states, to list the people who act against the stability of the Republic of Moldova, within the recently created sanctions regime. I proposed the creation of this sanctions regime on February 20, within the Foreign Affairs Council, and I am glad that, in record time, perhaps in the fastest process of creating a sanctions regime within the European Union, this sanctions regime was launched. Therefore, I hope that these lists will be adopted as soon as possible", said Bogdan Aurescu before the meeting of foreign ministers from the European Union countries.

Later, during the meeting, Aurescu requested the adoption of some lists of people who act to destabilize the situation of the Republic of Moldova within the sanctions regime created at Romania's proposal. However, it was not specified who it is.
