Klaus Iohannis: It is important for citizens to notice a concrete improvement in their daily life, a crucial element for a success story of the Republic of Moldova

Military aggression against Ukraine is the most destructive period since the Cold War. It is our responsibility, as the Community of European Democratic States, to respond to this historic moment and support the most vulnerable among us, said the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, at the opening of the plenary session of the European Political Community Summit, which is being held today at the "Mimi" Castle from Bulboaca.

We must be more and more aware of the geostrategic challenges facing countries such as Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, emphasized the President of Romania in the opening of the plenary session of the EPC Summit.

"It gives me great pleasure to participate in this second Summit of the European Political Community, all the more since we are here, in the Republic of Moldova, which is illustrative of the European vocation of the Republic of Moldova and the seriousness of the reform efforts dedicated to its accession to the European Union. It also demonstrates the focus on the entire Eastern Neighborhood and the Black Sea region."

President Iohannis welcomed President Zelenski's presence at the Summit, stressing that "we are united in our strong support for Ukraine and its people."

"Military aggression against Ukraine constitutes the most destructive period since the Cold War. It is our responsibility, as the Community of European Democratic States, to respond to this historic moment and support the most vulnerable among us. These states have chosen the path of democracy to protect their independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, upholding the values that have always been the basis of our struggle for freedom and democracy," declared Klaus Iohannis.

"In this context, I want to welcome the efforts of the leadership in Chisinau to manage two major challenges: the first is aimed at the process of reforms necessary for integration into the European Union, and the second is aimed at combating hybrid threats aimed at compromising stability and resilience", said the head of the Romanian state, who reviewed the actions to support the Republic of Moldova on its path to the European Union, which is full of challenges.

"Romania has provided crucial support for managing these challenges: by providing expertise in European affairs, to speed up the reform process and to initiate EU accession negotiations this year; by providing substantial financial and sectoral assistance. The Support Platform for the Republic of Moldova, launched by Romania together with France and Germany, the new sanctions regime adopted by the European Union with the first lists of people who acted against the stability of the state and the new EU Partnership Mission in the Republic of Moldova - are other concrete examples of our support."

In conclusion, the President of Romania sent a message to all citizens of the Republic of Moldova: "You are not alone!".

"The European Union and the other partners are here for the Republic of Moldova. Consolidating the Republic of Moldova also means strengthening the strategic resilience of Europe. What we need to do is to give our support more visibility for the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. It is important that they see a concrete improvement in their daily life. This is a crucial element for a success story of the Republic of Moldova", concluded Klaus Iohannis.

The President of Romania Klaus Iohannis arrived in the Republic of Moldova for the CPE Summit and was received by Maia Sandu.

The head of the Romanian state traveled on the same plane as the president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola. The Romanian delegation accompanying President Iohannis also includes the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bogdan Aurescu.
