US announces new $2 billion assistance package for Ukraine
The US has announced a new security assistance package for Ukraine. The package, which amounts to $2.1 billion and includes critical air defence capabilities and ammunition, is provided under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI).
"This ALIS package illustrates the continued commitment to both Ukraine's near-term critical capabilities and the enduring ability of Ukraine's armed forces to defend its territory and deter Russian aggression in the long term," a US Department of Defense statement said.
The support package contains additional munitions for Patriot air defence systems; HAWK air defence systems and missiles; Puma unmanned aerial systems; laser-guided missile system munitions, etc.
The source also notes that the United States will continue to work with its allies and partners to provide Ukraine with capabilities to meet its immediate battlefield needs and longer-term security assistance requirements.
