Canada supports Ukraine's accession to NATO. See under what conditions
Canada supports Ukraine's accession to NATO "as soon as the opportunity arises", says a statement adopted on 10 June in Kiev between Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who is on an unannounced visit to the war-torn country. The text of the statement was made public by the Office of the President of Ukraine, Ukrainkaia Pravda reports.
Canada stresses that Ukraine has the right to choose its own security measures. At the same time, Canada continues to focus on immediate support to strengthen Ukraine's ability to defend itself.
According to the document, Canada fully supports the Ukraine-NATO Council as a platform for further strengthening and expanding existing cooperation to facilitate Ukraine's path towards the Euro-Atlantic family, in line with the Bucharest Declaration.
"Canada supports Ukraine's acquisition of NATO membership as soon as conditions permit. Ukraine and Canada look forward to resolving these issues at the NATO Summit in Vilnius in July 2023," the statement reads.
Ukraine has signed similar declarations with more than half of the Alliance's member countries. So far, not all states support Ukraine's early accession to NATO.
