Russia says Ukrainian forces have captured the village of Peatyhatki in Zaporozhye region

Russia said Ukrainian forces captured the village of Peatyhatki in the Zaporozhye region on Sunday while suffering heavy losses, in a rare admission by Russia that it has lost ground in Ukraine, Agerpres.ro reports.

"Ukrainian forces managed to take the village under their control," the representative of the administration loyal to Moscow, Vladimir Rogov, wrote on Telegram on Sunday. He said Ukrainian forces managed to take the village despite suffering "colossal losses" during waves of attacks, claiming hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers were killed. There was no confirmation from the Ukrainian side. The area is now being shelled with artillery from the Russian side with the aim of encircling Ukrainian troops, Rogov said, noting that heavy fighting is ongoing.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces have reported fighting in several directions on the front. Images of large explosions and a fire were circulating on social media, showing the Ukrainian air force hitting a large Russian ammunition depot near the town of Henichesk in the occupied Herson region.

Both Ukraine and Russia are "suffering heavy casualties" during heavy fighting on the frontline, the British Ministry of Defence said in its daily briefing on Sunday. According to it, Russian troops have suffered their heaviest losses since the battle for the town of Bahmut in March. The British ministry did not provide an estimate of the number of dead and wounded.

The report says the heaviest fighting is taking place in Zaporozhye in western Donetsk and near Bahmut.

The British Ministry of Defence has been publishing daily reports on the war in Ukraine since it began nearly 16 months ago, but Moscow accuses London of waging a disinformation campaign.
