Ukraine aligns itself with the EU's decision to impose sanctions on people who try to destabilise the Republic of Moldova
Ukraine, along with several EU candidate countries, is aligning itself with the European Union's decision to introduce sanctions against those who want to destabilise the situation in Moldova. The European Union takes note of this commitment and welcomes it.
"The candidate countries North Macedonia, Montenegro, Albania, Ukraine and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, align themselves with this Council Decision. They will ensure that their national policies conform to this Council Decision," reads an EU press release.
The decision of the Council of the European Union establishes "a new framework for targeted restrictive measures against individuals who undermine or threaten the sovereignty and independence of the Republic of Moldova".
European Union member states adopted sanctions on 31 May against seven individuals from the Republic of Moldova, accused in particular of having links to "Russian efforts to destabilise" the economically fragile country.
On 28 June, the Committee on Exceptional Situations decided to update the list of persons subject to international sanctions and to tighten controls on their financial transactions in Moldova.
They are Gheorghe Cavcaliuc, Marina Tauber, Vladimir Andronachi, Veaceslav Platon, Constantin Botnari, Aleksandr Kalinin and Grigore Caramalac.
These individuals have also previously been included in the international sanctions lists of the United States of America, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Canada and Norway.
