Two more agreements with the CIS will be terminated without financial, economic or other consequences
These are the Agreement on Consumer Protection Cooperation and the Agreement on Technical Barriers to Free Trade. According to the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitisation, these Agreements are no longer relevant in promoting common policies, visions and actions in the context of Moldova's status as a candidate country for EU membership.
Specifically, our country has made commitments to align consumer protection policies with European ones, and these differ essentially from the systems of CIS countries.
The Agreement on basic guidelines for cooperation of the member states of the Commonwealth of Independent States in the field of consumer rights protection, signed in Moscow on 25 January 2000, and its protocol, as well as the Agreement on technical barriers in the area of free trade, signed in Moscow on 20 June 2000, will be denounced for lack of relevance and topicality. Two drafts to this effect were approved today by the Cabinet of Ministers.
The promotion of common policies, visions and actions is no longer topical, as the Republic of Moldova, in the context of its status as a candidate country, has undertaken commitments to align its consumer protection policies with the EU acquis in the areas of technical regulations, standards, metrology, accreditation, conformity assessment and market surveillance. All of these differ fundamentally from the CIS countries' systems.
"Denunciation of the Agreements will have no financial, economic or other consequences," noted Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economic Development and Digitisation Dumitru Alaiba.
The Republic of Moldova has no financial or other obligations that would have arisen during the validity of the Agreements.
