US allies express concern over Washington's decision to send cluster bombs to Ukraine

Several US allies have expressed concern over Washington's decision to supply Ukraine with cluster bombs, BBC reports. On Friday, the US confirmed it would send the controversial munitions to Ukraine, a decision President Joe Biden called "very difficult".

In response, the UK, Canada, New Zealand and Spain have come out against the use of the weapons. Cluster bombs have been banned by more than 100 countries because of the danger they pose to civilians. They usually release a lot of smaller bombs that can indiscriminately kill over a wide area.

The munitions are also controversial because of their failure rate. Unexploded bombs can remain on the ground for years and then be accidentally detonated, including by civilian activity.

In the meantime, Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleksi Reznikov promises that cluster bombs received from the Americans will not be used on Russian territory.
