Doctors in the Republic of Moldova saved a patient's life by performing a first-ever hybrid endovascular procedure
Doctors in the Republic of Moldova have saved a patient's life by performing a first-ever hybrid endovascular and surgical intervention, the Ministry of Health announces. The 60-year-old patient was operated on at the Republican Clinical Hospital "Timofei Mosneaga". At present, his health condition is satisfactory and the patient has been discharged from hospital.
According to the Ministry of Health, the patient was diagnosed with giant abdominal aortic aneurysm.
"In order to prevent the rupture of the aorta, the main vessel carrying blood throughout the body, due to aneurysm - its dilation, doctors applied the EVAR method. The minimally invasive endovascular procedure consists of inserting a tubular prosthesis through the arteries and implanting it in the weakened area of the aorta. Also, as blood flow was blocked from the abdominal aorta to the lower limbs, doctors performed the "femoro-femoral" bypass. That is, with the help of a graft, an alternative blood supply route was created to the areas where the native artery was clogged," the Health Ministry release said.
The cost of the surgery was covered by compulsory health insurance funds, the Ministry of Health said.
