Moldovan judges' association appeals to politicians to refrain from statements that can undermine public confidence in the judicial system
The Judges' Association of Moldova has appealed to the political class to refrain from making statements that can undermine public confidence in the judicial system. This is the reaction of the magistrates to the statements made on Monday, August 14, by Prime Minister Dorin Recean, who requested a report from the Ministry of Internal Affairs on the judges who have examined criminal cases filed against drivers caught driving under the influence of alcohol.
The Association qualified the statements made by the head of the executive as a generalisation and an unfair labelling of the system. At the same time, the judges argue that such statements denigrate the magistrates and that reform in justice must be made with respect for the fundamental principles of justice.
On Monday, Prime Minister Dorin Recean requested the Minister of Internal Affairs, Adrian Efros, to conduct an analysis of all road accidents in the last five years that have resulted in casualties. This will examine the profile of the drivers as well as the judges who have examined these cases. "The Moldovan justice is already emerging from the patterns of the theatre of the absurd," said the prime minister.
The statement comes in the context of the fact that, in recent times, more and more road accidents have occurred, resulting in deaths and serious injuries.
A serious accident occurred on July 24 in the Botanica district of the capital, where five people were seriously injured. Recently, the 29-year-old driver died in the hospital, leaving behind two children.
The driver of the Mercedes that caused the accident was identified and detained a few weeks after the accident.
The Ziarul de Gardă newspaper published an investigation that shows that he is involved in several criminal cases after being caught driving under the influence of alcohol.
In 2016, he was pardoned, and later, tried criminally for arbitrariness, but again escaped punishment because the statute of limitations intervened.
