Number of millionaires worldwide falls by 3.5 Million
The number of millionaires worldwide fell by 3.5 million last year, to 59.4 million at the end of 2022, according to the 2023 edition of the World Wealth Report by Swiss banks Credit Suisse and UBS, Le Figaro reports, as picked up by news.ro.
The United States remained the country with the most millionaires, with 22.7 million, followed by China with 6.2 million. France ranked third with 2.8 million millionaires, overtaking Japan, which now has 2.7 million millionaires.
The report attributed the decline in the number of millionaires to "declining average wealth and the abandonment of financial assets."
The United States also saw the biggest decline in the number of millionaires, with 1.8 million fewer millionaires in 2022 than in 2021. Japan and the United Kingdom also saw significant declines, with 466,000 and 439,000 fewer millionaires, respectively.
Only a few countries saw relatively small increases in the number of millionaires, including Norway (+104,000), Iran (+104,000) and Brazil (+120,000).
The annual survey by Credit Suisse and UBS also looked at the "ultra-rich", those with assets of more than $50 million. Here again, the United States dominates, with 123,870 ultra-rich people. China is again in second place (32,910), ahead of Germany (9,100), India (5,480), Canada (4,560) and Russia (4,490). France is only ninth (3,890).
