25 candidates apply for SCJ judges competition, acting Prosecutor General included

The Superior Council of Magistracy (SCM) has published the list of candidates who have submitted applications to participate in the competition for the replacement of judges at the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ). The list includes 25 persons, including the acting Prosecutor General Ion Munteanu.

Others on the list include the acting Deputy Prosecutor of the Chief Prosecutor PCCOCS Sergiu Brigai, the Director of the Justice Programme of the Legal Resources Centre of Moldova Vladislav Gribincea, the member of the CSP Svetlana Balmuș, lawyers, prosecutors and magistrates of the CA Balti, Chisinau Court and Criuleni Court.

The candidates will fight for 20 vacancies at the SCJ, including 11 career judges and 9 in the field of law.

The competition to fill vacant Supreme Court judgeships was launched on 10 April after several judges at the SCJ resigned. Subsequently, the competition was repeatedly extended. The SCM last extended the competition in June, after a failed attempt to appoint candidates to the SCJ posts in May.

The Supreme Court of Justice of the Republic of Moldova is the highest judicial authority in the country. It has the task of ensuring the correct and uniform application of the law, resolving disputes and guaranteeing the responsibility of the state towards citizens and citizens towards the state. The court is organised and operates on the basis of the Constitution, the Law no. 789–XIII on the Supreme Court of Justice of 26 March 1996 and other laws.
