Earthquake in Indonesia, tourists evacuated from hotels for fear of tsunami
A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake followed by aftershocks struck Bali and other Indonesian islands on Tuesday morning, the US Seismological Survey (USGS) said, AFP and Agerpres reported.
The quake struck at a depth of about 515 kilometres (515 miles) in the sea northeast of Bali at 03:55 local time (19:55 GMT Monday), according to the institute, which ruled out the risk of a tsunami.
Aftershocks were felt in Bali as well as on the nearby islands of Lombok and Sumbawa. Two aftershocks with magnitudes of 5.4 and 5.6 were recorded by the USGS.
Hotels evacuated guests and staff monitored beaches for fear of a possible tsunami. Authorities have not yet reported any material damage.
Indonesia frequently experiences seismic and volcanic activity because of its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where tectonic plates collide.
