Moldova's energy minister: Country won't be left without electricity

Moldova's energy minister, Victor Parlicov, has said that the country will not be left without electricity, even if Gazprom, the Russian state-owned gas company, stops supplying gas to the left bank of the Dniester, where the Cuciurgan thermal power plant is located.

Parlicov told the "In Context" program that it is technically possible to supply electricity from other power plants, but that this would require Moldova to pay more. He said that the government would have to come up with a compensation mechanism to offset the higher costs.

Parlicov also said that the main problem is the price issue and the economic impact of the suspension of gas supplies. He said that Transnistria would be the most affected, as it would have to find alternative sources of energy.
