Japan launches spacecraft to reach the Moon
Japan is aiming to become the fifth country to reach the surface of the Moon. A rocket carrying a lunar lander launched from a space centre in the southern part of the country. After three delays in August due to unfavourable weather, the spacecraft was successfully launched on Thursday morning, BBC reports.
It is expected to enter lunar orbit in 3-4 months. The small-scale lander is expected to reach the lunar surface in 4-6 months.
This mission aims to test Japan's precision landing technology. It also includes an X-ray satellite, developed with NASA and the European Space Agency, which scientists hope will provide new information about the hottest objects in the universe.
