Zelensky appoints new defence minister, Umerov
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has introduced Rustem Umerov as the new defence minister. Umerov, a prominent member of the Crimean Tatar community, is tasked with strengthening the Ukrainian military and leading it to victory in the ongoing war with Russia.
Zelensky said that Umerov's priorities as defence minister will be to provide the army with everything it needs, cut red tape, expand international cooperation, and bring the army into line with NATO standards. He also stressed the importance of rebuilding trust in the armed forces.
"Today, society is in a very difficult emotional situation," Zelensky said. "Maximum transparency and maximum effort not to lose trust will ensure the strength of the whole sector and will be among the minister's priorities."
Umerov said that his plan is victory. "We must do everything to bring it closer as soon as possible," he said.
Umerov is a graduate of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and the National Defense University of Ukraine. He has served in the Ukrainian military and the Security Service of Ukraine. He is also a member of the Crimean Tatar Mejlis, the representative body of the Crimean Tatar people.
