The caver, Mark Dickey, was part of an international expedition to explore the Morca cave in the Taurus Mountains in the Mersin province of Turkey. He began suffering from gastrointestinal bleeding at a depth of 1,040 metres.

The European Cave Rescue Association (ECRA) was alerted to the situation and dispatched teams of rescuers to the cave.

Dickey was rescued after a complex operation that involved teams from eight countries. He was flown to a hospital in Mersin for treatment.

"It is amazing to be back on the surface," Dickey said. "I stayed in the cave much longer than I expected because of an unexpected medical problem. I want to thank AFAD and the Turkish government for their support. They actually saved my life without hesitation."

Dickey is a well-known figure in the caver community and is a cave rescue specialist himself.

The rescue operation was a major undertaking, requiring the coordination of teams from around the world. It is a testament to the skill and dedication of the rescuers that Dickey was able to be saved.
