EU calls for suspension of Russia from UN Security Council
The European Union has called for the suspension of Russia from the United Nations Security Council, where it has veto power.
EU Council President Charles Michel spoke at the General Assembly podium, saying that Russia has initiated a war against Ukraine and is violating international law. The Kremlin regime cannot remain unpunished, Michel said.
"It is necessary to not allow the Kremlin this dangerous adventure. At the same time, the Kremlin is acting in a spirit of total impunity. This will not last forever, and the time for justice will come. The European Union will provide resolute and unwavering support to Ukraine to exercise its right to self-defence," the President of the European Council stressed.
The European Union is committed to a process of reform, the turning point being the war of Russia against Ukraine, but the United Nations must also be restructured, insists the President of the European Council. Russia is taking advantage of its veto power in the UN Security Council.
"Currently, this right is being abused. Because of this, the Security Council is in a state of paralysis, and the permanent members of the Security Council are acting with impunity, blatantly violating the charter and international law. They use the Security Council to spread propaganda, disinformation, and lies," Charles Michel noted.
The UN Security Council has five permanent members: the United States, China, France, the United Kingdom, and Russia. Through their veto power, they can oppose resolutions that are proposed in the council.
