Maia Sandu: Education is a national priority

Moldovan President Maia Sandu has called for education to be a national priority, saying that the quality of life in the country depends on the quality of education that children receive.

Speaking at a ceremony to honour the winners of the 2023 "Teacher of the Year" competition, Sandu said that education is essential for the development of a strong and prosperous society.

"I want us to be united by the mission of raising fulfilled children who are capable of building a happy future," she said. "The quality of life in the decades to come, the quality of the healthcare system, of all state services, including the quality of the political class, depends on the quality of education we offer today. And you, dear teachers, are on the front lines of this effort. You are the bridge to the future of every student. It will depend on you what children learn, but also how they feel. They learn what they see in us - if they see empathy, resilience in the face of challenges, critical thinking, they will develop these skills and pass them on to future generations."

Sandu also announced that a National Forum of Teachers will be held on October 7. The discussions will focus on the current situation in the national education system and on identifying solutions to the accelerated changes in the world.
