Nobel Prize for Medicine awarded to COVID-19 vaccine pioneers
The 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Katalin Kariko and Drew Weissman for their discoveries regarding nucleoside-base modifications that have enabled the development of efficient mRNA vaccines against COVID-19.
The Nobel Committee said that their revolutionary discoveries, which fundamentally changed our understanding of how mRNA interacts with our immune system, have contributed to the unprecedented pace of vaccine development during one of the greatest threats to human health in modern times.
Kariko is a Hungarian-American biochemist and professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Weissman is an American immunologist and professor at the University of California, San Francisco.
The Nobel Prize is accompanied by a cash award of approximately $1 million.
The remaining Nobel Prizes will be announced in the coming days and weeks.
