Over 338,000 displaced in Gaza as conflict rages
More than 338,000 people have been forced to flee their homes in the Gaza Strip, which is under siege and being bombed by the Israeli military, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), AFP and Agerpres reported.
The number of displaced people in the densely populated territory with 2.3 million residents increased by another 75,000 people by the end of Wednesday, reaching 338,934, the UN office said in a statement released Thursday.
Benjamin Netanyahu and his opposition rival, Benny Gantz, announced that they had agreed to form an emergency government and a war cabinet for the duration of the conflict, four days after the bloody and unprecedented attack launched by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas against Israel.
In his speech, the Israeli prime minister for the first time clearly expressed Israel's intention to "destroy" Hamas.
Israel says it is targeting Hamas in response to its weekend attack, which killed over 1,200 people in Israel, and that it is seeking to completely eliminate the terrorist group. The number of victims continues to rise, says Nebal Farsakh, a spokesman for the Palestinian Red Crescent, according to News.ro.
