"The author or authors of the attack had left the scene when the police intervened after receiving a call around 7:30 pm (6:30 pm GMT)," said a police spokesperson, Ilse Van de Keere, quoted by Agerpres.

"So far, there is no element that could suggest that it is a terrorist act," she emphasised.

The prognosis for one of the four injured is serious, according to the same source. The identity of the victims has not been specified.

Gunshots were fired on Avenue de la Toison d'Or, a generally bustling commercial artery near a shopping centre housing many major brands. The gallery was evacuated, according to Belgian press reports.

A security perimeter was established, and traffic was partially interrupted on the affected artery.

Television images from Belgian channels showed a large deployment of police cars and ambulances in the early evening.

Belgium is currently at threat level 3 (out of four possible), considered severe.

On October 16, in Brussels, a radicalised Tunisian killed two Swedish citizens with an automatic weapon on the evening of a Belgium-Sweden match. He was shot by the police the next day.

The attack was claimed by the Islamic State group, AFP reminds.
