Students' warmth: Pellets & kindness for Soroca's elderly
Winter's chill can be especially harsh for the elderly, particularly those living on limited means. In a heartwarming display of community spirit, students from the Ion Creangă Theoretical High School in Soroca, Moldova, have stepped up to ensure warmth and comfort for 17 vulnerable residents.
Through their annual "War of Coins" campaign, the students collected 9,000 lei, demonstrating remarkable empathy and generosity. These young people pooled their savings, proving that even small contributions can have a significant impact.
The funds raised were used to purchase 1.7 tons of pellets, essential fuel for heating homes during the harsh winter months. This timely delivery brought much-needed relief to the elderly recipients, many of whom live alone and struggle with limited pensions.
"It wasn't always like this," shared Tamara Balan, an 80-year-old resident of Zastânca village. "But now God has sent us help. The children are big, they understand what an old person means."
The impact of the students' actions goes beyond providing physical warmth. Their initiative fostered a sense of connection and appreciation across generations. "I am truly grateful for the warmth you brought us," expressed Victor Rublencu, another recipient. "It means a lot to know that we are not forgotten."
Olga Gherghiligiu, the project's coordinator, emphasised the importance of fostering compassion and social responsibility among students. "We wanted to involve as many students as possible, along with their parents, to extend a helping hand to those in need during this cold period," she explained. "We believe the elderly are particularly vulnerable, and we hope this tradition continues, spreading kindness and solidifying the bonds within our community."
The "Warm the Heart of an Elderly Person" campaign exemplifies the power of collective action. By pooling their resources and stepping up for vulnerable members of their community, these students have not only provided essential winter warmth but also kindled a spirit of empathy and social responsibility that will undoubtedly warm hearts long after the winter chill has passed.
