Russia accidentally bombs own village during attack on Ukraine
A Russian jet accidentally dropped its payload on the village of Petropavlovsk in the Russian region of Voronezh region damaging several private homes. The accident occurred at the same time as Russia had hit Ukraine with its latest large-scale missile attack, Kyiv Post reports.
“On January 2, 2024, at around 9 a.m. Moscow time (GMT), during a flight of the Aerospace Forces, an abnormal discharge of aircraft ammunition occurred over the village of Petropavlovsk,” the Russian army said in a statement quoted by Russian news agencies.
Moscow’s military confirmed that six private residences had been hit, but underlined that there were no injuries. A commission has been deployed to the scene to assess the extent of the damage.
The governor of the Voronezh region, Alexander Gusev, confirmed the incident in a Telegram post and also said that no one was injured.
Local residents complain that an entire street was destroyed and about a dozen houses were damaged. The affected residents are being relocated to temporary accommodation centers, including a nearby boarding house.
