Europe slams Russia: Child deportations "genocide"
In a strong condemnation of Russia's actions in Ukraine, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has unanimously adopted a resolution declaring the deportation of Ukrainian children as genocide.
This landmark decision marks a significant escalation in international criticism of Russia's war tactics and underscores the mounting concerns about the systematic targeting of Ukrainian civilians.
A Call for Global Recognition and Action
The resolution, backed by all 85 members present during the vote, sends a clear message to the international community. It urges parliaments across Council of Europe member states to officially recognize the child deportations as genocide against the Ukrainian people. Moreover, the resolution calls for:
- Increased political and humanitarian support for internally displaced children in Ukraine.
- Swift repatriation of children back to Ukraine to minimise the influence of the Russian regime.
- Support for the "Bring Kids Back UA" initiative and the creation of an international coalition for the return of Ukrainian children.
- Establishment of the Center for the Protection of Children's Rights under the Commissioner of the Verkhovna Rada for Human Rights.
Unanimous Condemnation, Unwavering Resolve
Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelenska addressed the PACE online during the resolution's debate, highlighting the gravity of the situation and the urgency of international action. Her powerful plea resonated with the assembly, resulting in the unequivocal condemnation of Russia's actions.
"The document contains an important political decision to recognize the criminal actions of Russia against Ukrainian children," Ukrainian news outlet RBC reported. "The resolution calls on the parliaments of all Council of Europe member states to recognize the deportation of children as genocide against the Ukrainian people."
Beyond Condemnation: Paving the Path for Accountability
While the PACE resolution serves as a powerful symbolic gesture of solidarity with Ukraine and condemnation of Russia's war crimes, it also carries significant legal ramifications. Recognizing the child deportations as genocide paves the way for holding perpetrators accountable under international law.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) is already investigating potential war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Ukraine. This resolution reinforces the ICC's mandate and strengthens the case for prosecuting those responsible for the systematic targeting of Ukrainian children.
