Vowing to hold any staff member involved in terrorism accountable, Guterres outlined a two-pronged approach: unwavering commitment to justice and continued support for UNRWA's vital humanitarian mission.

Zero Tolerance for Terrorism: Reiterating the UN's unwavering stance against terrorism, Guterres assured that any employee implicated in such acts would face the full consequences. "Any UN employee involved in acts of terrorism will be held accountable, including through criminal prosecution," he declared in a firm statement. The Secretariat, he added, stands ready to cooperate with relevant authorities in pursuing legal action against any individuals found guilty.

Humanitarian Imperative at Stake: While addressing the gravity of the accusations, Guterres underscored the critical role UNRWA plays in alleviating the suffering of millions of Palestinian refugees. Highlighting the agency's dedication to serving some of the world's most vulnerable populations, often in perilous environments, he implored governments to maintain their support. "The pressing needs of the desperate populations they serve must be met," he emphasized, urging countries that suspended funding to reconsider their decision and ensure the continuity of UNRWA's essential operations.

Transparency and Investigation: Addressing concerns raised by Israel and other nations, Guterres offered details about the UNRWA employees under investigation. Of the 12 individuals implicated, nine have been dismissed, one is confirmed deceased, and the remaining two are under ongoing investigation to verify their identities. The UN chief assured complete transparency throughout the process, stating that the organization is committed to uncovering the truth and taking appropriate action.

Navigating a Delicate Landscape: Guterres' response attempts to navigate a delicate geopolitical landscape. Balancing the need for accountability with the imperative of maintaining humanitarian aid for Palestinian refugees presents a significant challenge. The coming days and weeks will be crucial in determining the extent of UNRWA staff involvement and the ultimate impact on the agency's critical operations.
