Grosu: Europe represents peace, we deserve a referendum

Moldova's Parliament Speaker, Igor Grosu, confirmed plans for a constitutional referendum on the country's potential accession to the European Union.

In an interview with Jurnal TV, Grosu emphasised the importance of enshrining this "European path" within the country's supreme law.

"This will be a constitutional referendum," Grosu stated, outlining plans for nationwide information campaigns. "We will work tirelessly to explain to everyone why this choice is crucial for our future. Europe represents peace, prosperity, and respect for individuals, and we deserve all of these things."

Grosu's announcement follows a December 2023 amendment to the Moldovan Electoral Code, allowing for a referendum to coincide with national elections. This paves the way for combining the EU vote with the 2024 presidential elections, though the exact date remains undecided.

The initiative for a referendum stems from President Maia Sandu, who initially proposed it during her third-anniversary address in late 2023. She urged Parliament to organise the public vote in autumn 2024.
