Moldova seeks "Best Tourism Villages" for UNWTO recognition
Moldova is searching for its top rural destinations to compete in the prestigious "Best Tourism Villages" competition run by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
This initiative aims to spotlight outstanding examples of sustainable and culturally rich rural tourism experiences.
"Moldova's tourism potential, especially in rural areas, is blossoming," stated the Ministry of Culture in a press release. "This competition allows us to showcase villages that preserve traditions, promote responsible tourism practices, and offer unique experiences for visitors."
The project prioritises destinations that demonstrate efforts in:
- Promoting rural tourism: Highlighting landscapes, cultures, and traditional activities.
- Sustainability: Employing methods for efficient resource use, waste reduction, and innovation.
- Community empowerment: Facilitating access to finance and investment for local businesses.
Eligible villages must have less than 15,000 inhabitants, be situated in a setting rich with traditional activities, and reflect the community's values and lifestyle.
Moldova will submit a maximum of eight village proposals to the UNWTO after evaluating all applicants. In the previous edition, the village of Văleni earned recognition as a "Best Tourism Village," highlighting Moldova's potential in this sector.
