Belarus Bolsters Ukraine Border with Special Forces Brigade
Belarus has deployed a special forces brigade to its southern border with Ukraine, escalating tensions between the two countries.
Deputy Brigade Commander Vadim Bobilevici confirmed the deployment to STV, outlining the brigade's tasks as:
- Securing the Border: "Ensuring the security of Belarusian citizens, preventing border violations, and excluding channels of arms and ammunition delivery," Bobilevici stated.
- Protecting Infrastructure: The brigade will also guard "infrastructure and communication lines," he added.
- Modern Equipment: Bobilevici confirmed the brigade is equipped with "armaments, military equipment, communication devices, and drones."
Belarus Accuses Ukraine:
This move follows Belarus' accusations against Ukraine of concentrating over 100,000 troops on its border and engaging in "provocations." The Belarusian Border Committee claims Ukraine has deployed its "North" group near the border and bolstered security with 17,000 personnel. They also allege Ukraine is using volunteer forces near the border, including for training units later sent to combat zones.
Heightened Tensions:
The deployment of the special forces brigade intensifies the already tense situation between Belarus and Ukraine. No official response from Ukraine is available yet, leaving the potential impact on regional stability unclear.
