EU, Moldova Forge Transport Dialogue for Enhanced Connectivity
The European Union (EU) and Moldova inaugurated a High-Level Dialogue on Transport today, marking a new chapter in their cooperation and aiming to enhance regional connectivity.
"This dialogue represents a significant step forward for both Moldova's path toward EU membership and the Union's overall eastern connectivity," declared European Commissioner for Transport Adina Vălean at a joint press conference with Moldovan Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Andrei Spînu.
While not directly tied to financial aid, the dialogue will prioritise identifying shared goals and exploring funding options. It will also complement existing formats used in Moldova's EU accession negotiations.
The inaugural round of discussions will convene in Brussels on February 19th, tackling all forms of transportation and key issues like safety, digitalization, and sustainability. "We will explore Moldova's potential role in vital solidarity corridors for Ukraine, ensuring consistent freight flow within and beyond the EU," Commissioner Vălean emphasised.
Acknowledging the growing strain on Moldova's infrastructure due to rising trade volumes, Vălean expressed optimism for increased Moldovan participation in future European funding opportunities.
"Launching this high-level dialogue with the EU underscores our robust collaboration in the transport sector," stated Minister Spînu. "It further reaffirms Moldova's unwavering commitment to EU integration, with transportation being a strategic priority. We deeply appreciate the EU's support, which fuels our confidence and optimism."
Minister Spînu is currently in Strasbourg attending the dialogue's launch.
