Klaus Iohannis: "We are strongly involved in supporting Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova"
The President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, launched a series of ideas that he is going to propose to the European Parliament, on how he can support the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine in the process of joining the European Union. The statement was made by the leader from Cotroceni during a press conference held together with the president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola.
"We also clearly discussed the war in Ukraine and how we need to stay united. We discussed, as we discuss every time, I must tell you, also about Moldova - what can be done to support Moldova, especially now that it has been decided that it should become part of the European space. We have a common vision of our future, of the Union, and I think it is very good that many of these issues are being discussed today, in the European Parliament. I will release a series of ideas that I have developed lately. I am very curious to see the reactions of the European parliamentarians", declared the Romanian official.
Moreover, Klaus Iohannis said that the European Union must be expanded, and the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and the Western Balkans must be part of the Union. The head of the Romanian state said that "he is strongly involved in supporting Ukraine, as well as the Republic of Moldova, which is intensely affected by the crisis in the region".
"We need to focus further on security. We are now moving towards joint, long-term planning and increased convergence in European security and defence. We work in full complementarity with NATO and it is indeed time to fulfill our European ambitions in terms of our Defense industry. On the other hand, there are undoubtedly also strategic issues related to the concept of the European Union, which we must deal with as soon as possible. The internal functioning of the Union must become more efficient, more fluid, faster. So the architecture of the Union needs to be improved. The Union must expand - that's my opinion. We need to include Moldova, Ukraine, the Western Balkans. They want to be part of the Union, we want them to be with us. Why have these discussions lasted for some already 20 years?", concluded Iohannis.
The Romanian official thanked the European Parliament for constantly supporting Moldova and Ukraine in the EU accession process.
