Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Condemns Death of Alexei Navalny

The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) condemns the repeated violations of international law by the Russian Federation and reiterates the crucial importance of Russian authorities respecting human rights and fundamental freedoms without delay.

This message was issued by the MAE following the announcement of the death in prison of Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses its deep regret following the announcement of the death in prison of Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny. (...) Alexei Navalny will forever remain a prominent figure in the fight for transparency, justice, and respect for fundamental rights. His death represents a significant loss in the ongoing efforts to consolidate democratic values. We express our sincere condolences to Alexei Navalny's family during this difficult time. We share their pain and stand in solidarity with those who have admired and supported courageous voices for democratic change," the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement released to AGERPRES on Saturday.

Alexei Navalny represented one of the most prominent figures of the opposition in the Russian Federation, organising numerous anti-government protests within the country. He subsequently became a consistent target of President Vladimir Putin's regime due to his activism and dedication to a democratic and free Russian state, the MAE states.

In 2021, Alexei Navalny was poisoned with a neurotoxic agent and received treatment at a clinic in Germany. The politician then made the decision to return to Russia to serve as an example for all those who fight against authoritarian regimes, despite the inherent risks.

"His conviction represented an arbitrary and legally abusive act, constituting a serious violation of legal norms. In 2021, Alexei Navalny was awarded the Sakharov Prize by the European Parliament," the MAE statement from Bucharest continues.

As announced by the Russian authorities on Friday, Alexei Navalny died in the Arctic region prison where he was serving a 19-year sentence. However, his lawyer and wife have not yet confirmed the death of the Russian opposition figure.
