G7 Foreign Ministers Hold Moment of Silence for Alexei Navalny

Foreign ministers of the G7 nations observed a moment of silence at the beginning of their meeting in Munich on Saturday.

This solemn act paid tribute to the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who died in prison on Friday, as reported by the Italian G7 presidency and cited by Reuters.

"Navalny's fight for freedom and against corruption in Russia effectively made him a target, leading to his murder," stated Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani as he opened the meeting of major democracies, held alongside the Munich Security Conference in Germany.

Tajani urged Russia to provide transparency surrounding Navalny's death and to cease its unacceptable suppression of political dissent, according to his ministry.

Alexei Navalny's team confirmed his death on Saturday, February 16th, citing information received from the politician's mother. This announcement extinguished the last hopes held by his supporters.
