Germany Travel Strike Chaos: Flights Cancelled, Trains Halted
Widespread travel disruptions plague Germany as simultaneous strikes by flight attendants and train operators cripple air and rail services.
Lufthansa flight attendants are demanding a 15% wage increase and inflation compensation, leading to around 600 cancelled flights at Frankfurt Airport alone. The disruptions are expected to spread to Munich Airport on Wednesday.
Adding to the chaos, a separate strike by locomotive engineers has brought passenger rail service to a standstill. The union seeks a 35-hour workweek with no pay reductions. This marks the sixth recent strike against Deutsche Bahn.
Passengers are facing extensive delays and cancellations, expressing a mix of frustration and understanding.
“Those who can least afford it are always hit hardest,” remarked one traveller. “But I see why they’re doing this.”
The intertwined strikes underscore ongoing labour disputes within Germany's transportation sector.
