Moldova's Fight Against Discrimination Continues
The Parliament of Moldova voted to appoint five new members to the Equality Council on March 28, 2024. The appointed individuals are Carolina Bagrin, Ian Feldman, Victorina Luca, Andrei Lungu, and Gheorghina Drumea.
The candidates were selected through a public competition. Ian Feldman and Victorina Luca were reconfirmed to their positions, having also served on the previous council.
The competition for selecting candidates for membership of the Equality Council consisted of two rounds. Fourteen individuals advanced to the interview round.
The Equality Council is an autonomous, impartial, and independent public authority established in 2013. Members of the Council are appointed by the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova for 5-year terms.
The mission of the Equality Council is to ensure protection against discrimination, guarantee equality, promote equal opportunities, and foster diversity.
The Equality Council's responsibilities include:
- Examining the compliance of current legislation and draft normative acts with non-discrimination standards.
- Monitoring the implementation of legislation in this domain.
- Examining complaints and restoring the rights of victims of discrimination.
- Informing and sensitising society with the goal of eliminating all forms of discrimination.
