Moldova Begins Power Line to Romania, Boosts Security

Construction work begins today, March 29, on a critical power line linking Moldova and Romania. The 400 kV Overhead Electrical Line on the Vulcănești - Chișinău direction will connect the Republic of Moldova's energy system with Romania's.

The power line, starting from Congaz, will span 158 km across 8 districts with an expected completion date in 2025, according to authorities.

President Maia Sandu, present at the groundbreaking ceremony, emphasised the project's historical significance.

“This is undoubtedly one of the most important projects since independence. It marks a turning point between two eras: a Moldova vulnerable to those who can cut off gas or electricity at will, and an independent Moldova free to choose where to buy energy at the best price, without the pressure of political blackmail,” President Sandu declared.

Energy Minister Victor Parlicov assured Radio Moldova that all necessary materials are on hand to commence construction, with additional shipments soon to follow.

“All construction materials are here – the metal pylons, the insulators. Over 20% of the total supplies are delivered, and we expect more soon. This ensures a smooth start to this fundamental project for Moldova's energy security. While many focus on gas, energy itself has always been our vulnerability," the minister stated.

The project also includes the modernization of the Vulcănești station, allowing for integration into Chișinău's electrical grid. This line will bolster energy security and enable greater cross-border energy flow with Romania.

The updated infrastructure will increase power supply reliability to Moldova's central region, including the capital Chișinău, thus enhancing the stability of the entire energy system.

The line's design is currently underway. Key equipment has already been manufactured and factory-tested. The contractor (Siemens Energy SRL, Electromontaj SA, and Energotech SA, Romania) will oversee design, production, delivery, installation, testing, commissioning, and training for:

This approximately €27 million project is funded by the World Bank. Additionally, three other interconnection lines with Romania and Ukraine are in progress: Bălți-Suceava, Strășeni-Gutinaș, and Vulcănești - Arciz (Odessa region).
