Vetting Commission Member Resigns: Integrity Evaluation in Focus

One of the three international members of the Vetting Commission, Maria Giuliana Civinini, has formally informed Parliament, the Legal Committee, Appointments and Immunities, as well as the Vetting Commission itself, of her decision to resign effective May 15, 2024.

In a missive directed to the Legislature, the magistrate conveyed her appreciation for the bestowed opportunity.

Maria Giuliana Civinini, a retiring judge with over four decades of experience within the Italian judicial system, including tenure as the President of the Tribunal of Pisa and as a member of the Superior Council of Magistracy, has tendered her resignation.

It is imperative to underscore the mission of the "Pre-Vetting" commission, which is tasked with conducting a comprehensive assessment of the ethical and financial integrity of candidates vying for pivotal roles within the realm of justice administration. This evaluation hinges upon exhaustive scrutiny of their professional conduct, adherence to principles of honesty and professionalism, and the absence of any actions that might cast doubt on their integrity.

Furthermore, it is noteworthy that the "Pre-Vetting" Commission was instituted on April 4, 2022, pursuant to Law no. 26 of 10.03.2022, which delineates specific measures governing the selection process for candidates seeking positions as members within the self-administration bodies of judges and prosecutors. This commission, comprising six members, operates with a mandate to assess the integrity of prospective leaders within the justice system. Three members are appointed by Parliament, ensuring proportional representation between the majority and the opposition based on electoral mandates, while the remaining three are nominated by development partners.
