Former athlete Ion Șoltoianu, released from prison

After he had spent some time in detention for blackmail, Ion Șoltoianu was released from custody following a decision of the Chisinau Court based in Buiucani. The decision of release was taken based on the expiration of the constitutional term of preventive detention, which is 12 months. Soltoianu was placed under judicial control for a period of six months.

We remind that the former athlete was previously sentenced to 14 years in prison for murder, blackmail and illegal possession of weapons. He was behind bars for eight years and was later released following legislative changes that allowed for a reduced sentence for inhumane or degrading conditions of detention.

In April 2023, the former athlete was detained again, being accused of blackmail. According to the prosecutors, he claimed more than five million lei from a former fellow prisoner. The file was sent to court in October, and in addition to the blackmail accusation, Şoltoianu was also being investigated for an incident of physical aggression in March 2022.
