European Parliament Elections: Impact and Process Explained
The forthcoming European parliamentary elections, slated for this year, are poised to favour both the citizens of the European Union and those of the Republic of Moldova, given our nation's earnest endeavour to attain full membership within the EU.
Prime Minister Dorin Recean articulated these sentiments during a televised interview on TVR Moldova.
"Elections, regardless of their location, including those within the European Union, serve as a confirmation of the political leadership guiding the respective institutions. I firmly believe that EU citizens hold European values dear, thus the outcomes of these elections are expected to benefit both EU citizens and the Republic of Moldova, which aspires to join the EU," stated Dorin Recean.
In light of this, the Prime Minister encouraged Romanian citizens residing in the country to actively participate in the European parliamentary elections and exercise their voting rights.
It is imperative to acknowledge that the European parliamentary elections of 2024 will transpire across all EU member states in early June.
Romania will be represented by 33 MEPs in the forthcoming legislature, with mandates allocated proportionally based on party votes. Political parties in Romania must secure a 5% electoral threshold to send representatives to the European Parliament, while independent candidates must achieve a threshold of 3.2%.
The European Parliament stands as the singular directly elected transnational assembly globally, entrusted with representing the interests of 450 million EU citizens. Its responsibilities encompass debating, proposing, and endorsing legislation that impacts various facets of life within the European Union, ranging from economic support to addressing poverty, climate change, and security concerns.
