Ukraine and France marked Victory Day in the war against Nazi Germany

Today, France marks Victory Day in the war against Nazi Germany. Emmanuel Macron followed tradition and went to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Ukraine adopted the Western practice and today commemorates the fallen heroes of the Second World War in the same way. The May 8,9 discrepancy is also due to the time zone difference, when the act of capitulation came into effect. It was past midnight in Moscow.

French President Emmanuel Macron respected the May 8 tradition, although he was expected in Marseille to meet the Olympic flame. He went to the tomb of the unknown hero. Under the triumphal arch is buried a French soldier who fell in the First World War. To keep his memory alive, a flame was lit in 1923 that continued to burn even during the Nazi occupation. Every year, the symbolic relighting ceremony takes place. Macron greeted the members of the veterans' associations who are part of the "comité de la flamme", meaning the committee of the flame.

After Russia launched the full-scale invasion, Ukraine took up the Western tradition and celebrates the end of the war in Europe on May 8. President Zelensky recorded his message in the basement of the school in the village of Yahidne, Chernihiv region, where, two years ago, about 300 locals, including 60 children, were held captive by the Russian army for almost a month. Seven people were executed and ten died due to the inhuman conditions of detention.

"80 years ago, millions of Ukrainians fought to defeat Nazism forever. But today, Ukrainians are again resisting the evil that has reborn, returned and wants to destroy us again. An inhuman army kills, tortures, destroys civilians, and razes towns and villages to the ground. The embodiment of evil is Russian fascism, abbreviated FR," Volodymyr Zelensky pointed out.
