Bomb Explosion Kills Seven Soldiers in Northwest Pakistan

The explosion of a bomb that targeted a military truck killed seven soldiers on Sunday in northwest Pakistan, along the border with Afghanistan, the army announced, as cited by Reuters.

The incident took place in the Lakki Marwat district, located on the edge of a lawless tribal region, divided by both sides of the border.

An improvised explosive device exploded near a military vehicle, killing seven soldiers, including an officer, the army specified in a statement.

"The perpetrators of this atrocious act will be brought to justice," it specified.

There has been no immediate claim of responsibility.

The tribal region has long been a safe haven for Islamist militants operating on both sides of the border.

An umbrella group of Islamist and sectarian militant groups called Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has waged a war against the state to try to overthrow the government. It seeks to lead Pakistan as an Islamic state governed by its own harsh interpretation of Islam.
