Switzerland Summit: Moldova's Path to Peace with Global Cooperation

Bilateral cooperation between the Republic of Moldova, the USA, Georgia, and Latvia, regional security, as well as Moldova's European integration were topics discussed by Maia Sandu during meetings with the US Vice President and leaders from Riga and Tbilisi at the Peace Summit in Switzerland.

During her meeting with US Vice President Kamala Harris, President Sandu addressed Moldova's bilateral cooperation with the USA and regional security.

"We discussed the strong partnership between Moldova and the USA, emphasising our shared commitment to regional peace and security. We look forward to continuing our cooperation."

At the Peace Summit for Ukraine, Maia Sandu met with her Georgian counterpart, Salomé Zurabishvili. President Sandu expressed Moldova's support for Georgia's aspirations towards a brighter and more democratic future.

"We reaffirm our support for the Georgian people's European aspirations."

Additionally, President Sandu met with the Latvian President, Edgars Rinkēvičs.

"We underscored the importance of collaboration to ensure that future elections in Moldova remain free from malign foreign interference," Maia Sandu wrote on the X platform.

It is noteworthy that Switzerland is hosting a Peace Summit in Ukraine at Bürgenstock (Nidwalden Canton) on June 15 and 16, 2024. The purpose of this meeting of heads of state and government is to develop a shared understanding of a path toward a just and sustainable peace in Ukraine, laying the foundation for a peace process.

Switzerland has repeatedly expressed its willingness to invite Russia to the Peace Summit in Ukraine. However, Russia has consistently indicated its lack of interest in participating. Thus, no official invitation has been extended to Russia.

The Summit aims to initiate a peace process and Switzerland firmly believes that Russia must be included in this process as it progresses. A peace process without Russia is inconceivable.

At Ukraine's request, Switzerland has invited over 160 delegations from around the world to participate in the inaugural Peace Summit in Ukraine. Representatives from more than 90 countries have confirmed their attendance.

The Summit includes plenary sessions with all delegation heads participating, as well as discussions on various topics in smaller formats. Discussions will focus on critical global issues, including nuclear security, food security, and humanitarian concerns such as the situation of war prisoners and civilian detainees.
