President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, Withdraws from NATO Leadership Race
In today's meeting of the Supreme Council of National Defense (CSAT), President Klaus Iohannis informed NATO allies that he withdrew last week his candidacy for the position of Secretary General of the Organization, reports digi24.ro.
President Klaus Iohannis announced yesterday that he would present his position on the NATO leadership candidacy at the CSAT meeting on Thursday.
"In the CSAT meeting, the President of Romania informed NATO allies last week about his withdrawal from the candidacy for the position of Secretary General of the Organization. President Klaus Iohannis asked the Council members to express their stance on Mark Rutte's candidacy for NATO Secretary General. They declared themselves in favour of Romania supporting the Dutch Prime Minister's candidacy," informed the Presidential Administration.
Hungary withdrew its opposition to Mark Rutte's appointment as NATO Secretary General, reported the Dutch press on Tuesday.
According to the cited source, Slovakia also withdrew its opposition to Rutte. Romania was the only country that was still opposed.
