EU vs. Russia: Media War Heats Up

The Russian Foreign Ministry announced restrictions on broadcasting and access to the websites of 81 EU media outlets in Russia, retaliating for the EU's adoption of the 14th package of sanctions on June 24.

The Kremlin's sanctions target several media outlets, including three Romanian television stations.

The Foreign Ministry's list includes media outlets from all EU member states except Luxembourg and Croatia, encompassing publications, television channels, and radio stations. Three Romanian television stations are also on the list: Digi24.ro, ProTV International, and B1TV. Meduza reports that the Russian Foreign Ministry is willing to revisit its decision if the EU lifts the restrictions on Russian media.

The European Union banned access to Russian state-controlled media outlets on June 25, including RIA Novosti, the Izvestia and Rossiyskaya Gazeta newspapers, and the "Voice of Europe" portal. The EU claims these outlets play a significant role in supporting Russia's war in Ukraine and destabilising the situation in neighbouring nations.
