Moldova Schools Get Energy Efficiency Boost (€50M+)
Over €50 million will be invested in energy efficiency projects for roughly 50 schools across Moldova. This initiative also aims to improve the district heating system for public buildings.
The measures are outlined in a Loan Agreement between Moldova and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD).
The agreement, approved today by the Cabinet of Ministers, allocates $35 million for energy efficiency projects in educational buildings. These projects will encompass measures to improve thermal insulation, such as insulating walls and roofs, replacing windows and doors, renovating interior heating systems, and upgrading interior lighting systems. Additionally, heat pumps, thermal solar collectors, and photovoltaic panels will be installed on existing school rooftops.
The Ministry of Energy estimates that a total of 46 schools nationwide will undergo energy renovations, benefitting over 46,000 students, teachers, and staff with improved comfort levels.
The project also includes funding for measures to enhance the energy efficiency of the district heating system for public buildings, including 11 schools. This will involve installing approximately 250 individual heating stations at building sites and reconfiguring the district heating network within the centralised system. Emergency response measures are also incorporated into the project.
Scheduled for implementation between 2024 and 2029, the project boasts a total budget of $54.5 million. IBRD will provide a $50 million loan, while the Multi-Donor Trust Fund "Moldova – Development, Resilience and Opportunities for Well-being (M-GROW)" will contribute a $4.5 million grant for technical assistance and project implementation support.
The Loan Agreement between Moldova and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development requires approval by Parliament.
