Moldova Boosts Defense Budget, Eyes Modern Military
The Moldovan government plans to gradually increase the national defence budget to 2% of GDP by 2030.
The additional funds will be primarily directed towards developing and modernising the National Army. This strategic shift is outlined in the newly approved National Defense Strategy for 2024-2034.
Defense Minister Anatolie Nosatîi emphasised the strategy's role in guiding Moldova's response to potential security threats and risks. "The National Defense Strategy outlines potential risks and threats to national defence in the current security climate," Minister Nosatîi said. "It defines the political defence goals, the methods and resources required to achieve them, and establishes the objective of developing a modern defence system with professional personnel."
Prime Minister Dorin Recean echoed the project's significance, highlighting its contribution to civic education, fostering patriotism, and promoting social cohesion.
The strategy identifies potential threats to national defence, including the establishment of a land military corridor to Moldova's borders by Russia, hybrid operations conducted by Russia against Moldova, and the operational capacity of the illegally stationed Russian military forces on Moldovan territory.
The project underwent consultation and evaluation by defence specialists from the United States and Romania before being approved.
